With the completion of Normanton Barracks in 1877, a permanent military presence was established in Derby.

At Little Chester/Chester Green (grid reference SK353375), the location of the old Roman fort, was the location of the Roman camp of 'Derventio'. In July 917, the town was captured by Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia, subsequent to which the town was annexed into the Kingdom of Mercia, after it became one of the 'Five Boroughs' (fortified towns) of the Danelaw.

Derby Playhouse closed in February 2008 after a lengthy period of financial uncertainty. Derby's most used leisure facility is Markeaton Park.

Being the location of the world's second largest aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, and Derby Litchurch Lane Works, UK's only train manufacturer, Derby is a centre for advanced transport manufacturing.

The main campus of University of Derby is on Kedleston Road. In north Derbyshire, there is another campus at Buxton.

In 1967, Derby gained a high profile following the appointment of Brian Clough as manager of Derby County F.C.
